Nepal's foremost Barahi shrine

A goddess kept by her forest

Eight kilometres from Lalitpur, at roughly 1,500 metres above the valley floor, Shree Bajrabarahi Devi sits at the heart of a twenty-hectare forest — the most revered of Nepal's four Barahi temples, and the living lungs of Godawari Municipality–11, Chapagaun.

Introduction

The temple and its ward

Shree Bajrabarahi Devi stands in Chapagaun, an area now administered as Ward No. 11 of Godawari Municipality, in the hill country south of Lalitpur — formerly its own Village Development Committee before Nepal's 2017 local-level restructuring folded it into Godawari. Of the four Barahi temples worshipped across Nepal, this is the most widely visited, drawing pilgrims not only for its deity, but for the rare, undisturbed forest that surrounds it.

To the temple's east lies its most photographed feature: a pagoda-roofed shrine framed by dense woodland covering roughly twenty hectares. Locals describe the forest and temple as inseparable — the trees keep the air clean, and the shrine gives the forest its reason to be protected.

Chapagaun itself carried an older name: Champapur, after the golden champa (magnolia) trees said to have once grown thickly here, before the settlement took its present name.

Godawari Municipality — the local body that now includes this ward — recorded a total population of 97,633 in Nepal's most recent national census (2078 BS / 2021 AD). In the census before that, Chapagaun (today's Ward 11) was already the single most populous ward in the entire municipality, home to over ten thousand residents, a mark of how central this ward has long been to the wider area.

The living shrine

A forest that guards its goddess

The woodland ringing Bajrabarahi is more than scenery — it is habitat, watershed, and an act of continuous local stewardship, all within a single afternoon's walk of the temple gate.

Forest canopy

Jamuna, lapsi, wild areca (locally "fishpump"), wild katush (chestnut), chilaune, lakhesi and sandev trees grow through the temple grounds, with wild orchids blooming across the understory.

Wildlife

Jackals, wildcats, civets and leopards move through the undergrowth, while parakeets, doves and other birds — 39 species in total — fill the canopy above the temple.

Medicinal & folk plants

Areca nut, ground and applied to the forehead, is taken as a headache remedy; a folk love-charm plant called sahadev-sahadevi grows here too, alongside bijayshala, an important medicinal herb now at real risk of disappearing from the forest.

Under pressure, still standing

Once far denser, the forest has thinned in recent decades. A protective 50-metre buffer now applies around any structure — including the visitor shelters built within its edge.

Villagers say that no monkey lives here permanently — but around fifteen or sixteen arrive each year and linger for four or five days, a visit local legend ties back to a vow made by the goddess Gupteshwari (see Legends, below). No crow is ever said to spend the night in the forest, and fallen leaves that blanket the ground by day are said to vanish by evening, blown entirely away. Locals also treat the forest's wood as off-limits for everyday use, taking only what tradition allows.

Local caretakers continue to treat the forest as inseparable from the deity it surrounds: shelters and rest-houses for pilgrims are deliberately kept back from the tree line, and replanting is an ongoing, community-led effort.

The wider complex

Older shrines share the ward

Bajrabarahi is the best known of several older shrines scattered through Chapagaun — a cluster of temples, most now generations old, that the community maintains alongside the main Devi temple.

A three-faced Mahadev shrine, considered one of the ward's more valuable images, also stands nearby — part of the same constellation of temples that early residents established across the settlement. Photographs for several of these shrines — Bhansar Ganesh, Krishna, Brahma and Nasadyo among them — are still being sourced; if you have images of these, they can be added here.

The image itself

The goddess, and the thefts that shaped her shrine

Bajrabarahi's idol has as dramatic a history as the temple around it — consecration, theft, recovery, and the security measures that followed.

The shrine is founded

According to the temple's own genealogical record, King Shree Niwas Malla built and established the shrine (devgriha) on a Monday in the month of Chaitra, in Nepal Sambat 786. Local tradition also describes the goddess's idol — standing on two buffaloes, with three eyes, four arms and a boar-like face, richly adorned with ornaments. The temple was later repaired by King Vishnu Malla in Nepal Sambat 852.

2025 BSc. 1968 AD

Stolen, then recovered

The earliest recorded theft of the idol took place in 2025 BS, when it was taken by poachers. Police later recovered it — though by some accounts, the original image was subsequently kept at the Chhauni National Museum in Kathmandu for safekeeping, given the risk of housing so valuable an idol inside an open forest temple.

Later decades

Two more thefts, and a safe

The temple's own commemorative records describe two further thefts of the deity in more recent decades. In response, the local community raised funds for a steel safe, installed inside the temple in Chaitra 2061 BS (2004 AD), so the image could be locked away between periods of worship rather than left openly displayed.

A wider pattern of theft

Security has remained a concern for the whole complex, not only the main shrine: in 2023, three Buddha statues were stolen from elsewhere in Chapagaun, prompting local protests when the culprits went uncaught for weeks — a reminder of why the community keeps investing in safeguarding its sacred images.

How it began

According to local legend, a Malla king of Bhaktapur was passing through Chapagaun after a battle and stopped for the night. Told that something frightening lay sleeping on a nearby hillock — a shape wrapped head to toe in white cloth — he went to see for himself and drew back the cloth. The goddess appeared before him in her boar-headed form and granted him a boon: that an idol be made in her likeness, and that a jatra be run in her honour every year on the full moon of Chaitra. The Bhaktapur king duly had the idol and a ceremonial khat (palanquin) built, and the jatra began.

The day itself

At 7 the same morning, the goddess is brought down from her resting shrine to a mandap prepared below, where devotees offer puja and sacrifice goats, ducks and roosters until around midday. She is then placed on the khat and carried in procession back into the main temple. Guthi households of Chapagaun offer their own puja and sacrifice inside. Around 6 in the evening she is brought back out to the ashta-mandap (eight-sided pavilion) in front of the temple.

At midnight, without a single bell rung, she is carried by khat to a spot in Chapagaun known as Bhagawati Tyachagal. Village dignitaries and, in earlier times, the local Pradhan Panch would attend with a formal offering, and jewellery from the priest's own household is used to adorn her. The khat then makes its Sindur Jatra — a vermilion-throwing procession — through Chapagaun, ending at the Ganesh temple in Bhansar tole, where it is finally dissolved. The moment is synchronised with a goat-head homa burning to ash at the Tikabhairav temple; once the ash confirms the jatra's end, the Tikabhairav priest announces it to everyone, and Chapagaun's devotees traditionally cross over to join the fair at Tikabhairav — a practice that still continues.

The chariot that wouldn't come home

Elders tell of one Chaitra Purnima, years ago, when the jatra chariot suddenly could not be stopped: it rolled all the way from Chapagaun into Kathmandu, coming to rest at Hanuman Dhoka, and no amount of effort could pull it back. Only after the matter reached the royal palace, and a forgiveness puja was offered along with a black goat, did the chariot finally turn for home. Since then, a yearly government puja on jatra day became tradition.

Chapagaun runs this khat jatra twice a year. On the night of Mangsir Ashtami, between 8 and 9, the head-only images of Bajrabarahi and the Ashtami Navadurga are carried by khat from the deity's courtyard house to the temple. Pode caretakers traditionally offer a pig's snout as a ritual first-offering before the khat is brought inside, where Chapagaun's residents keep an all-night vigil of puja and sacrifice goats.

Later that night, Khumba caretakers (khum naike) perform their own worship and goat sacrifice; the goat's head is taken outside to the jogishala beside the temple, where the priest completes the rite with a homa. The following morning, devotees arriving for darshan would once receive a small prasad (samay-baji) at a marker kept on a rest-platform to the south — a custom that lapsed once this jatra itself fell into abeyance for some years.

On the same Ashtami night, men from Bulugaun traditionally cook and eat a meal (marja) at the temple; a small divination follows — choosing between bhababakaye and papakaye ("take the roti" or "take the deity") — and elders say that whichever village chose "papakaye" in the old telling ended up without the deity's favour. The khat is then kept overnight at Pode tole. On Mangsir Dashami, after morning puja, it is carried tole to tole through the afternoon, taken through the bazaar in procession, and finally dissolved in front of the Ganesh temple by 6 or 7 in the evening.

Bajrabarahi's birthday is marked every year on the tenth day of the dark fortnight of Jestha. Brahmin priests build a mandap and perform a homa fire ritual, after which the temple priest offers puja and sacrifices a goat. For the roughly two hours this puja takes, the temple doors are closed to everyone — devotees who arrive early must wait, and only once the rite is finished can anyone come in for darshan.

Once the indoor puja ends, the offerings are carried to the nine masan (cremation ground) sites that ring the temple, where a further bali-puja is performed. A small procession, with musicians, then circles the masan three times — a rite meant to drive away any lingering spirits before the celebration is considered complete.

Families of Chapagaun known as "Khagu" once hosted a communal feast during Dashain, using the meat of a buffalo sacrificed to Bajrabarahi. Raw meat from the same sacrifice was also distributed, small portions door to door, to households across the village. Both customs ended after a health post was built on the ground traditionally used for the feast — a site locals once associated with a guardian spirit said to bathe there each midnight before coming to pay respects at the temple.

Beyond these, the nine nights of Navaratri and the fair on Bada Dashain day both draw large crowds, and on Saturdays and other special occasions the goddess is adorned in her full jewellery. Photographs of these jatras are still being gathered — if you have images from any of them, they can be added here.

Local belief

Legends the ward still tells

Alongside its documented history, Bajrabarahi carries a whole second history in oral legend — passed down by village elders and recorded in the temple's own booklet. A selection follows.

Elders say that when Shree Mahadev came looking for a place to settle in Kwagu forest, in Chapagaun's Ward 6, Bajrabarahi took the form of a boar and confronted him there — afraid that if Mahadev settled so close, her own worship would be overshadowed. Mahadev fled the forest and went on to settle at Lalitpur's Bhardev instead, as Shree Gupteshwar Mahadev. To this day, a Vasuki Naag (serpent deity) stands to Bajrabarahi's right, said to have originated alongside her.

Newar pagoda temples are normally topped with a gilded gajur (pinnacle) — Bajrabarahi's never has been. Legend holds that when the temple was first built, the priest preparing to install the gajur had a dream: it could only be placed once a body from Bulugaun, brought for cremation at the graveyard in front of the temple, had been placed there — and that anyone who installed it by force instead would die. No one has ever dared force the matter; the temple's lack of a gajur is confirmed within living memory by the late Buddhilal Karmacharya, a respected local voice on the temple's history.

One telling holds that the goddess once took the form of a small child, crying beside a river she couldn't cross. A local passer-by refused to help. A stranger from outside the village then came along, saw her crying, and carried her across without hesitation. She revealed herself and blessed him: from then on, any outsider who settled in Chapagaun and built a household there would never want for food. Locals still point to this as the reason why so many who moved to Chapagaun from elsewhere went on to prosper.

When Shree Gupteshwari Mai once invited Bajrabarahi to visit, Bajrabarahi turned her entire forest to gold overnight to welcome the invitation in kind. Seeing it, Gupteshwari realised Bajrabarahi was the wealthier and more powerful of the two, and made a vow on behalf of her own monkeys at Gupteshwar: should any of them ever fall from a tree and risk losing their place among their kind, they must first visit Pashupatinath and Hanuman, bathe in the waters of the Seven Kunds of the Seven Villages, and finally come pay their respects at Bajrabarahi — only then would they be accepted back. To this day, some fifteen or sixteen monkeys are said to arrive each year and linger around the temple for four or five days before turning back.

Villagers say fallen leaves that cover the forest floor by day are entirely swept away by wind each evening around 3 or 4 o'clock, leaving nothing behind — taken as a sign of the goddess's power. No crow is ever said to roost here overnight; one sceptic once caged a crow inside the temple grounds to test it, and by nightfall something seemed to be pulling the bird away by hand. Locals also avoid taking firewood or fallen branches from the forest for their own use, believing it invites bad dreams and illness — with one standing exception: wood from this forest is still used for cremations when someone from Bulugaun dies. Traditionally, only a few caste groups — the temple's priests, and the Kuwar, Pode and Nagarkoti communities — gather dried, already-fallen branches, which go toward community shelters, bridges and cremation wood.

Heritage & restoration

Built and rebuilt by the community

Every stone stair, water tank and coat of paint at Bajrabarahi has a name attached to it. The temple's recorded history is really a record of family, royal and village contributions stretching back more than a century.

What to see

The pagoda-roofed Devi shrine, the Vajrayana gumba, the memorial Hanuman platform, and the older cluster of Ganesh, Shiva, Narayan and Saraswati temples nearby.

Respecting the forest

Keep to marked paths and shelters, which are set back from the tree line by design — the forest is as much a part of the shrine as the temple itself.
